How to Clean Your Window Air Conditioner
Summer is here! That means longer days, hotter temperatures, and your window air conditioner working overtime. Before the heat really kicks in, it’s a smart idea to clean and maintain your AC unit so it runs smoothly and keeps your home cool.
The good news? Cleaning a window AC doesn’t take much time or fancy tools. Follow these simple steps to get your unit ready for summer.
Important: Always unplug your window AC before cleaning it.
Step 1: Clean Your AC After Taking It Out of Storage

If your air conditioner has been sitting in the attic or basement all winter, it’s probably dusty and covered in cobwebs. You don’t want that blowing into your home.
What to Do:
-
Wipe down the outside of the unit with a microfiber cloth and water.
-
Remove the front grill and clean it, too.
-
Let everything dry before putting it back together.
Helpful Tip:
Before storing your AC next winter, cover it with plastic or a tarp. This will keep dust and debris off and make cleaning much easier next year.
Step 2: Clean or Replace the Filter
If your AC isn’t blowing cold air like it used to, a dirty filter could be the problem. Filters collect dust, pollen, and pet hair, which can block airflow.
How Often?
-
Clean reusable filters once a month during heavy use.
-
Replace non-reusable filters every 2–3 months.
-
If you have allergies or live in a high-pollen area, clean it more often.
What You’ll Need:
-
Vacuum cleaner
-
Dish soap
-
Warm water
-
Towel
How to Clean the Filter:
-
Slide the filter out of the unit.
-
Vacuum off loose dust.
-
Wash it in warm water mixed with dish soap.
-
Gently scrub with a sponge if needed.
-
Rinse until the water runs clear.
-
Let it dry completely on a towel before putting it back.
Extra Tip: Never put a damp filter back into the unit. It can cause mold and unpleasant odors.
Step 3: Clean the Coils
Your window AC has two types of coils:
-
Evaporator coils (behind the filter)
-
Condenser coils (at the back of the unit)
These coils help cool the air. When they’re covered in dirt, your AC has to work harder and may use more electricity.
What You’ll Need:
-
Vacuum with a brush attachment
-
Old toothbrush
How to Clean Them:
-
Use the vacuum brush to gently remove dirt and dust.
-
Use a toothbrush for stubborn debris.
-
Be gentle so you don’t damage the coils.
Extra Tip: If the coils are extremely dirty or greasy, you can use a store-bought coil cleaner (available at hardware stores). Always follow the product instructions carefully.
Step 4: Check the Coil Fins
Coil fins are the thin metal strips along the back of the unit. They help with airflow but bend easily.
If they are bent, airflow decreases and your unit won’t cool as well.
What to Do:
-
Buy a simple fin comb from a hardware store.
-
Gently straighten bent fins.
This small fix can improve cooling efficiency and help lower your energy bill.
Bonus Maintenance Tips
-
Make sure the unit is tilted slightly outward when installed so condensation drains properly.
-
Check the seal around the window to prevent hot air from leaking inside.
-
Listen for unusual noises — rattling or buzzing could mean something is loose.
-
If your unit smells musty, it may need deeper cleaning to remove mold buildup.
